Agency Positioning and Ideal Client Profile

Positioning is sacrifice.

If your positioning hasn't cost you a piece of work you would happily have taken, you don't have positioning. You have a tagline.

That is the part everybody skips. Picking a niche is easy and free. Turning down a decent-sized project because it is outside the niche is neither, and it is the only thing that makes the niche real to anybody but you.

Your Ideal Client Profile is the operational version of that decision. Not a marketing exercise, not a persona document with a stock photo. A scoring rubric you run before you spend an hour on a call, so the choice happens while it is still cheap.

These posts cover how to define the profile, how to score against it, why Niche/Nail/Scale works in that order, and what competitive positioning looks like when everyone in your category is describing themselves with the same four words.

Almost every client you had to fire was an ICP failure that showed up nine months late.
